Feed For All

Did you ever try to shortcut something simply because you were leery of the learning curve, only to regret it later? I have to admit I am guilty of that with RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Even though I knew it was "really simple" according to its name at least, I dreaded learning. But I wanted to have a blog.

Blogs are essential to online marketing these days. That's obvious -- you see them everywhere, from the NY Times website to the BBC feeds. People really like blogs and newsfeeds, and they are much more than entertainment. RSS feeds are a great way to communicate information about your products and services.

Before FeedForAll - What a Mess!

So what did I do? I downloaded one of the "blog packages" that are available online. It went pretty well, but it did require that I upload 385 files and 65 subdirectories. Yep, you read that right - 385 files and 65 subdirectories!

Ok, uploading isn't a big deal, and it didn't take very long to get a nice-looking blog set up. I was supposed to change some permissions afterward, for security reasons. But when I tried - guess what? The blog didn't work. Being the busy person that I am, I left it that way. After all, it was working, wasn't it?

The first time my blog crashed, I was mildly annoyed. I tried troubleshooting it, but just imagine troubleshooting 385 files in 65 subdirectories. I ended up reloading the thing. It would usually go along for a few weeks, and then crash again. I would normally try troubleshooting for a half hour until my blood pressure started to go up -- then I would reload it.

FeedForAll Saved the Day

Finally I decided my days of procrastination were over, and I would learn RSS feeds the right way. I purchased FeedForAll and glanced through the help file. FeedForAll has a quick RSS primer, which gives you a nice overview of the basic structure of RSS, explained simply, and I immediately felt at more at ease with the process.

I was directed to start up the New Feed Wizard, which seemed like an excellent idea to me. So I jumped right on it. Using the Wizard, I had my feed set up in no time. I added a couple of items, and uploaded them to my website in no time at all.

Even better, I now understood the process - and guess what? It really is simple. It doesn't take 385 files and 65 subdirectories after all.

Now I can take my basic website design and add the feeds wherever I want. It's so easy to add a new item to my feed with FeedForAll.

I still face the task of converting my old feeds, but I don't think it will take long. You can import feeds into FeedForAll, and it looks like it will be a snap. I have a little webpage design left to do, but when I'm done it will really look like part of my website (much more professional!) and will I ever save myself a lot of future headaches.

Of course, now I'm kicking myself for not doing it right from the beginning. But better late than never, I always say.
